Moving to Hollis Before School Starts: A Timeline and Checklist for Families

by Christina Marmonti

So you found your house, made it through inspections, survived the closing table, and somehow ended up in Hollis, New Hampshire with boxes everywhere and a child asking where their room is. Congratulations. Now, about school.

If you are moving with kids and hoping to have everyone settled and registered before the first bell rings, the good news is that SAU 41 makes the process straightforward. The not-so-surprising news is that summer goes faster than anyone expects. Here is a realistic, accurate timeline to keep things on track.

First, Know Which School Your Child Will Attend

SAU 41 serves both Hollis and Brookline through six schools. For families residing in Hollis specifically, the grade structure is as follows:

Hollis Primary School serves grades PreK through 3. Hollis Upper Elementary School serves grades 4 through 6. Hollis Brookline Middle School serves grades 7 and 8. Hollis Brookline High School serves grades 9 through 12.

All four of those schools serve Hollis residents. The middle school and high school also serve Brookline students, which is why you will hear them referred to as cooperative schools under the COOP district. One community, shared resources. It works well.

Know the First Day

The board-approved first day of school for the 2026 to 2027 school year is Wednesday, September 3, 2026. Staff return August 31, with professional development days on September 1 and 2. That means families aiming to be registered and ready before school starts are working with a real deadline, not a suggestion, and that deadline is closer than it feels right now.

What You Will Need to Register

SAU 41 requires the following documents for new student enrollment, pulled directly from their current registration page at sau41.org:

Proof of legal name and birth date, such as a birth certificate, passport, or hospital birth record.

Two forms of proof of residency. The first must be one of the following: a signed lease agreement covering the current school year, a finalized current deed, or a current property tax bill. The second must be a current utility bill showing a Hollis address. Accepted utilities include electricity, home heating fuel, and internet. PO Boxes are not accepted.

Current immunization records and a copy of a recent physical.

The completed SAU 41 Pre-Registration Form, which is available on their website.

If applicable: a copy of any IEP or 504 Plan from the previous school, and a parenting plan if relevant to your custody arrangement.

For grade-specific additions: students enrolling at the middle school need a copy of their most recent report card or transcript. Students enrolling at the high school need a copy of their high school transcript, or a report card for incoming 9th graders. Incoming PreK and Kindergarten families need to complete the Development History Form and call Hollis Primary School directly at 603-324-5995 to schedule an appointment.

A Note on Closing Timing

If you are closing on your home in late July or August, your deed may not be recorded yet when you go to register. Your finalized deed is one acceptable form of residency proof, so timing matters. Call the school office directly if you are in a tight window. They are helpful and have seen this situation before.

Scheduling Your Registration Appointment

Each school requires an in-person appointment to drop off registration documents. Contact numbers are:

Hollis Primary School: 603-324-5995

Hollis Upper Elementary School: 877-465-5474

Hollis Brookline Middle School: 603-324-5997

Hollis Brookline High School Registrar: 603-821-4477

Do not just drop in. Call first, schedule your appointment, and bring everything in one trip.

Course Scheduling and Classroom Placement

For middle and high school students, a school counselor will meet with your family in July or August to review academic records and work through course selection. For grades K through 6, classroom placement information becomes available after back-to-school registration forms are submitted in late July. This is worth knowing so you are not wondering in August whether something got lost in the shuffle.

Bus Transportation

The bus company receives student enrollment information in early August. Registering sooner rather than later helps ensure your child is on a route from the very first day. For transportation questions, Hollis Transportation can be reached at 603-465-7805.

A Realistic Summer Timeline

Now through late June: If you are under contract, keep your closing timeline in mind. Families who close in late June or early July give themselves the most comfortable runway for registration.

At closing: Secure your deed, get your utilities transferred into your name immediately. These are your two most critical registration documents.

First week of July: Download and complete the SAU 41 Pre-Registration Form from sau41.org, call your child's school to schedule a registration appointment, and pull together all required documents in one folder so nothing gets buried in a moving box.

July: Attend your registration appointment, get confirmation that enrollment is complete, and make note of when course counseling appointments are scheduled for middle and high school students.

Early August: Confirm bus route information with Hollis Transportation. Check PowerSchool or your school-specific portal for classroom placement once back-to-school forms are finalized. Update or schedule any required physicals and immunizations now, not the week before school starts.

September 3: First day of school.

One More Thing Worth Saying

Moving mid-summer with children is logistically demanding and emotionally more complicated than the paperwork suggests. Hollis is a genuinely welcoming community and the schools reflect that. Most families who make this move report that their kids found their footing faster than expected. That does not mean it is effortless. It just means it is worth the effort.
